What's New

[New baby sprouts in the greenhouse] This page was updated Feb. 20, 2009. A new feature for the web page is this easy to use "Shopping list" for you to mark up and bring with you to the greenhouse. Simply click on the graphic and print this handy two-page list of the plants grown at the Canyon Bounty Farm.

Shopping ListThere are always new plant introductions, and I am intrigued to try something new. These have been introduced to the greenhouse this year because of customer requests, an incredibly enticing write up in the seed catalogue or it's something that I've always wanted to try.

The following list notes the heirloom varieties with an *.

Bug Bloom Blend Seed Packet
This unique seed packet has been discretely available at the greenhouse for several seasons. The seven different flower varieties have blooms that attract beneficial insects into your garden to prey upon the bad bugs like aphids and spider mites. Plant it close to the vegetable garden; you can even put the flowers in a bouquet. Comes with an informational handout on beneficial insects.

Canyon Bounty’s Own Garden Seed
I do have some of my own seed to offer:
Contender Garden Bean*
Darn early, very good, not stringy and holds it slender shape for a long picking period.
Shirofumi Edamamae Soybean
It’s just about the most delicious green food a person can eat. A fresh eating soybean that is easy to grow, and even easier to eat.
Bachelor Button Flowers*
An easy to grow annual blue flower that reseeds. Plant someplace in the garden where you can let them come back year after year. Makes a nice cut flower, too.
Landis Frost Resistant Tomato *
75 days. Indeterminate.
Tried this one on a whim last season, and now I can’t imagine my garden being without at least one of these plants. Wow! It produced a lot of perfect, tennis ball size fruits. Very hardy and great flavor, too.

White Beauty Tomato *
85 days. Indeterminate
This tomato was once part of the greenhouse lineup. I got inspired to bring it back after reading Amy Goldman’s new book: The Heirloom Tomato. A dangerous book to own because the temptation to grow each of the featured varieties is so strong. I’m going to read it cover to cover after the greenhouse season ends!

Siberia Tomato *
Another hardy variety that should be tested against the other early 1 gallon varieties.

Plum Lemon Tomato *
72 days. Indeterminate
Really looks like a lemon. Fruits are 3” long with a pointed end. Meaty, sweet refreshing taste.

Red House Free Standing Tomato
75-85 days. Determinate
This bushy plant requires no staking; would make a great patio or container tomato. Slicing-sized fruits are firm, juicy and delicious. Broad leaves protect fruits from sun scald.

Beefsteak Tomato
80 days
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me they wanted a good slicing tomato to fit on a sandwich, I would be rich. But this is the kind they are talking about. Firm, medium-size fruits are loaded with old time tomato flavor.

Pistou Basil *
A customer request for a small-leaved, bushy basil plant. Plants are one-foot tall, and are perfect for edging a flower/vegetable border. Would work real well in a container.

Red Baron Onion
115 days
Excellent large, red storage onion with strong tops and roots. Thick skin enhances the crops ability to store for a long time.

McMahon’s Bird Hot Pepper *
90 days from transplant.
A hot pepper whose roots can be traced back to plants grown in Thomas Jefferson’s garden in the 1800s. Fruits are 1/4" long, ovoid and bright red. Has medium heat.

Red Rocoto Hot Pepper *
95-130 days
A unique Peruvian hot pepper with thick walls. Purple flowers are followed by green fruit that ripen to red. Has black seeds. Requires a long growing season.

Epazote *
Also called "Mexican Tea", this rare aromatic herb enhances the taste of black beans and aids digestion. Decided I needed to bring this herb back after I watched Rick Bayless’ cooking show.

Lemon Thyme
73 days
Another citrus variety joins the thyme team. A tender annual that will be appreciated in the kitchen.

Yolo Wonder Bell Pepper
75 days
A patient customer has been requesting this pepper for several seasons. Finally, I remembered. A big blocky bell described as 4.5 x 4 inches with 3 or 4 lobes. Great foliage to minimize sunburn on the fruit.

Ambrosia Muskmelon
86 days
Many customers ask for this hybrid melon. It has thick peach-colored flesh with a small seed cavity. Melons are 6 inches and have top notch sweetness.

Amy - Canary type Melon
75 days
Bright yellow fruits can’t be missed. Smooth skinned fruits don’t have sutures or netting. White flesh is sweet and firm. Vines can stretch out to 6 feet long.
