What's New

[New baby sprouts in the greenhouse] This page was last updated Feb. 24, 2008. There's a new greenhouse under construction at Canyon Bounty Farm so that should mean lots of new growing space. However, I still hope to stay small, and somewhat sane and manageable. But there are always new plant introductions, and I am intrigued to try something new. These have been introduced to the greenhouse this year because of customer requests, an incredibly enticing write up in the seed catalogue or it's something that I've always wanted to try.

The following list notes the heirloom varieties with an *.

Garden Sweet Burpless Cucumber
My customers astound me with how much they love burpless cucumbers. Here's another one that boasts high yields, and dark green fruits that are 8-10 inches long.

English Thyme *
A hardy perennial, this thyme grows 12-15 inches tall, and is highly aromatic. A nice upright shrub for the kitchen garden.

Hale's Best Melon *
This heirloom melon is a heavy producer of oval-shaped fruits that average 3 lbs. An early melon it has exceptional flavor.

Canary Melon
73 days
This French variety is yellow and smooth skinned. Very aromatic flesh, and the best melon for cooking.

Rocky Ford Melon *
Developed in 1881, this green-fleshed, fine-grained melon has a heavy net. Produces lots of fruit.

Superstar Melon
80 days
This is a customer request. Large, juicy sweet orange flesh is what makes this melon so popular. Has deep sutures and course netting. 6-8 lb. fruits.

Cal Wonder Sweet Bell Pepper *
70 days to green, 80 days to red
This is the classic bell pepper that is still setting the standard: lots of fruit, nice and big blocky shape and tender, sweet flavor. Fruits start out green and will eventually turn red. Plant is upright and vigorous.

Cal Wonder Orange Bell Pepper
A nice early orange bell pepper that produces nice blocky, sweet fruits. Plants have lots of foliage to provide good shade cover, preventing sunscald.

Manitoba Tomato *
66 days. Determinate.
I've been reading about this variety for a long time, and decided it was time to try it. A vigorous variety, it bears large quantities of 3-4 inch, crimson red fruits. Flavor is described as refreshing, tangy tomato taste. A productive, early heirloom it is available as an early tomato in the 1 gallon can.

Bush Celebrity Tomato
67 days. Determinate.
I get lots of requests for the smaller plant size (determinate shape) red tomatoes. So I've tried to add a few of those this year which includes this new hybrid. A compact plant with the great Celebrity tomato flavor. 8-9 oz. fruits are good slicing size.

Sprinter (or Crimson Sprinter) Tomato
65-75 days. Indeterminate.
I used to grow this tomato when I farmed in Portland and had forgotten about it until I saw it in the seed catalogue this winter. Likes cool conditions so it will be available as an early tomato in the 1 gallon can. Medium sized fruits have a nice balance of sweet and acid flavors.

SunSugar Cherry Tomato
62 days. Indeterminate.
A customer request. A super sweet orange cherry tomato that has been bred to not crack. Fruits are borne in long clusters on vigorous plants.

Yellow Perfection Tomato *
70 days. Indeterminate.
An English heirloom with potato leaf foliage, the fruits have a sweet flavor. Lemon-yellow fruits are good slicers.

Rose de Berne Tomato
80 days. Indeterminate.
A perfectly round, pink tomato that has a rich sweetness. A French variety of medium size, I decided it was time to add another pink slicing variety to the greenhouse.

Bella Rosa Tomato
There's this one seed catalogue that always tempts me with a new tomato variety each year. This is the one for 2008. It likes heat, grows on the shorter, determinate plants and has high yields of large, smooth, deep red fruits.

Heartland Tomato
68 days. Indeterminate.
A customer request. Trialed by hundreds of home gardeners who gave it great reviews. Vines grow to 3-4 feet, produce lots of meaty, 6-8 oz. fruit all season.

Sunmaster Tomato *
72 days. Determinate
The Treasure Valley heat is no friend of tomato blossoms that have a tendency to drop off when temps go beyond 90 degrees. This hybrid isn't afraid to keep working in the heat. Sets full-flavored, 6-8 oz. red fruits when the rest of us are seeking air-conditioned comfort.

Heatwave II
68 days. Determinate.
Zamzow's tomato guru Mike Stanton likes this one. Does well in our heat. Fruits are red, and average 6-7 oz.

Burbank Tomato *
70-80 days. Determinate.
Plant breeder Luther Burbank introduced this in 1915. A tart slicing tomato, Burbank has the highest levels of free amino acids of tested varieties. Stocky plants do not need staking.

German Red Strawberry Tomato *
85 days. Indeterminate
A customer request. Big red oxheart tomatoes average 10 oz. They are meaty with a flavor that tilts toward the acid side. Tall plants produce a lot of fruits.

Delicious
77 days. Indeterminate.
A customer request. It was only a matter of time before Canyon Bounty Farm was offering this variety. It holds the world record for the largest tomato ever grown. Red, smooth-skinned fruits are nearly solid and can weigh up to 2 lbs.
